What is your favorite kind of plants?
I love all kinds of plants, especially ones that have a sculptural quality to them. Hoyas and cactus are the ones I have the most of in my home.
Which plants captures your personality?
My spirit plant is the Epiphyllum anguliger (a.k.a. fishbone cactus). It's resilient and made of squiggles!
Tell us about when you first fell in love with plants?
When my husband and I moved into our first apartment together after college, the very first thing we purchased and brought into the space was a coconut palm plant. I loved seeing it grow with us and it just instantly transformed the space into our home.
Tell us about your favorite ways to decorate with plants?
I collect ceramics so I have a lot of vases but they always sat empty around the house. Last year I started propagating my plants and now have a variety of cuttings that live in the vases until they grow roots and are ready to be potted in a planter. I repeat this process so there's always something beautiful living in the vases without creating any waste.
Why do you feel houseplants are necessary in your home?
Houseplants bring so much life and beauty into my home and I truly enjoy taking care of them.
What are your must-have accessories for the perfect plant corner?
I don't think I can keep my plants alive without a moisture meter handy. It tells me when the soil is dry so I don't overwater, such a game changer!
Have you noticed any trends in houseplants?
Sometimes I notice that there's a focus on collecting the most plants possible and I remind myself that I’m really a minimalist at heart so it’s okay not to have a true indoor jungle in my own home.
What's the next plant you want to get?
I would love to get a few more cacti for my front porch.
Who are some of your favorite plant ladies?
Danae from Folia Collective, Ilana from The Small + Savage Wild, and my mom. I bring sad plants to my mom's house for rehab and they usually do so well with her that I don't have the heart to bring them back home with me.
Do you have any tips for aspiring plant ladies?
Collect slowly to learn what types of plants work for you and your space. I can't keep a pothos alive even though there's a general consensus that they are the easiest plants to take care of. Find what works for you and run with it!
